Amarr cable and drum replacement in Long Beach typically runs $130 – $250 installed, depending on drum condition and whether one or both sides need work. We stock Amarr-compatible cables and drums on our trucks, so most replacements happen same-day. The giveaway is usually obvious: a frayed cable dangling from a roller, or a door that jerks halfway up and stops because one side lost tension.
Most Long Beach homeowners discover the failure the hard way. One cable snaps, the door goes crooked, and suddenly the opener is fighting an impossible load. The good news: we diagnose it fast, quote it in writing before any work starts, and the replacement is covered by our 365-day guarantee.
Which Amarr Models This Applies To
Amarr builds doors under several lines: the Lincoln, Heritage, Classica, and Olympus series are the ones we see most across Long Beach. The cable and drum assemblies on these share a common design, but the drum size isn’t universal. Some Amarr doors pair a 4-inch drum with a standard cable, while heavier insulated models use a larger taper drum that changes how the cable spools during the lift cycle.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people hit: Amarr’s residential drums are marked with a part number on the inside face, but the cable diameter matters just as much. Amarr residential doors mostly use 1/16-inch or 3/32-inch aircraft-grade steel cable. A mismatched cable slides or binds on the drum, and you’re back in the same spot within months. We match both pieces during the service call, not the guess.
On OEM versus aftermarket: Amarr’s OEM cables and drums are solid, but they’re also marked up past what the metal is worth. Quality aftermarket equivalents, built to the same gauge and spool profile, perform identically for most residential models. We stock both and tell you the price difference. The choice stays yours.
Brock Garage Doors Long Beach is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Amarr. We install Amarr-compatible parts because we know these doors; the name on the truck isn’t the factory.

Signs Your Amarr Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
- Visible fraying or unraveling near the bottom fixture. Cable strands separate where the cable loops around the bottom bracket. Once three or four strands break, the cable loses roughly half its load rating and the rest goes quickly.
- Door jerking or shaking when opening. This gets reported as “the opener sounds tired” from all over Long Beach. The cause is usually the cable riding unevenly on a scored drum, which shifts tension mid-cycle.
- Door lifting crooked, one side higher. When one cable is stretched and the other is intact, the panel rack becomes uneven. The door visually teeters. Running it longer strips the drum and eventually folds the door in the tracks.
- Grinding or scraping from the drum area. A worn drum that’s missing its groove edge lets cable slip and re-bind, which sounds like metal dragging. The cable might also be jumping the drum entirely.
- Cables visibly slack when the door is closed. With the door fully down, both cables should hold light tension. If either side sags, the drum has slipped, the cable has stretched, or the set screws on the drum have backed out.
Any one of these can fail completely and drop the door. Most Amarr doors weigh 150 to 250 pounds. You don’t want it coming down uncontrolled in a Long Beach garage where your car or a kid might be underneath.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
We quote Amarr cable and drum replacement in Long Beach between $130 and $250 for a single-side replacement, and $220 to $400 when both cables and both drums need doing. The spread comes down to drum type, door weight, and whether the bottom bracket is salvageable. The price you approve on the written quote is the price you pay. No exceptions, no “we found more once we opened it up.” That’s not how we operate.
Every replacement includes the parts, the labor, a track and spring balance check, and a written 365-day guarantee. We also inspect the opposite side because cable failures rarely happen alone. If the second cable is near failure, we tell you and price it before we touch the first one. You decide. No surprised invoices after the fact.
What You Pay For
- Cable replacement (single): $130 – $250 including parts and labor
- Drum replacement (single): $150 – $280, matching the existing drum profile
- Both cables and both drums: $220 – $400, recommended when the door is older or both sides show wear
- Bottom bracket replacement: $50 – $90, only if the old one is cracked or seized
DIY or Call Us?
You can visually inspect the cables. You can look at the drum for scoring or rust and pull the manual release to test whether the door balances. What you shouldn’t do is attempt the replacement. The cable is under constant tension. If it lets go while you’re working on it, the moving cable and the drum take off with more force than anyone expects, and a hand in the wrong place goes with it. We’re saying this with respect: this is not a YouTube project.

FAQs
Amarr cables and drums in Long Beach typically last 7 to 10 years, though coastal humidity near the beach can shorten that to 5 or 6 on doors that face the marine layer daily. Cables usually fail before drums. If your door is older than a decade and the cables are original, replacement is a maintenance item, not a surprise.
A frayed Amarr cable should be replaced, not spliced. Splicing residential garage door cable restores maybe 60 percent of its original load rating, and the splice point catches on the drum. You’ll be back in the same spot within months, likely worse. Replacement is safer and cheaper than a second service call.
A single-side cable and drum replacement usually takes 45 to 75 minutes. Both sides run 90 minutes to two hours. We carry Amarr-compatible cables and the common drum profiles on the truck, so there’s no second trip unless a specialty part needs to be ordered for a larger commercial-style door.
We stock Amarr-compatible cables and the most common residential drum profiles on our trucks, plus parts for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie systems when an opener is involved. For some heavier Amarr models with oversized drums, we may need to order the drum and return in a day or two. We’ll tell you that before you agree to anything.
